Marching Warriors end on a high note

By: Noah Radloff

Wesclin High School’s Marching Band ended their season with seven outstanding performances of their show, “Look Closer.” The band performed at all the Friday night home football games, as well as four different competitions: the Sullivan Marching Band Competition, the Tiger Ambush Classic at Edwardsville High School, the Bi-State Marching Invitational in Potosi, Missouri, and the Pinckneyville Mardi Gras Parade & Competition. The Marching Warriors received placement and caption awards at each of their four competitions. They also were awarded the Grand Champion trophy at their Pinckneyville competition for the highest combined field and parade competition scores. In addition to this, at The Bi-State Marching Invitational, Wesclin qualified for the finals out of an overall 23 different schools. This marks the first time Wesclin has ever made finals at this competition after attending it for over 10 years. The percussion section won the ‘Outstanding Percussion’ award three different times, and one member of the band, Owen Henderson, was awarded ‘Outstanding Drum Major’ three times. Owen’s brother, Collin Henderson, also earned the ‘Outstanding Soloist’ award at the Pinckneyville competition. “I'm really proud of everyone in the program and I’m glad I could be a part of it,” said senior band member, Ruth Kvistad. “This will be one of the most memorable marching seasons for me, not because of awards that we won, but because the show was interesting, entertaining, and the students really seemed to enjoy working on it,” said band program director, Rodney Washburn. Moving forward, the band will be performing at concerts in December, March, and May, as well as at all the home basketball games.
