Written by Faith Saulsberry

On Friday, March 9th, the Wesclin’s Academic Challenge in Engineering and Science (ACES) Team headed to Southwestern Illinois College where several individual medals were awarded. Senior, Owen Henderson, placed 1st in English; senior, Anissa Mumford, placed 2nd in English and physics; senior, Nate Brede, placed 3rd in drafting; and junior, Ryan Gladden, placed 2nd in chemistry. The following students qualified for the state competition: Owen Henderson, Anissa Mumford, and Ryan Gladden. The ACES team, consisting of Kelsey Bray, Nate Brede, Evan Buckles, Daniel Geiler, Haileigh Gilley, Ryan Gladden, Owen Henderson, Jamie Kattenbraker, Jason Kattenbraker, Anissa Mumford, Abby Oster, Rachel Terwilliger, Alicia Trimble, and Chloe Wankel, were chosen based on teacher recommendations and qualifying tests. Each student was to complete two tests out of seven topics including: biology, chemistry, physics, math, English, engineering graphics, and computer science. When asked about the latest ACES competition, Kelsey Bray said, “Even though the whole team didn’t advance to state this year, I’m excited for all those that qualified, and I wish them the best of luck at state this year!” On April 23rd, Wesclin students will cheer on Owen, Anissa, and Ryan as they attend Eastern Illinois University to compete in the state competition.
