ACES Finish Second in Regional Competition

Submitted by: Mr. Jason Schleifer

The ACES (formerly WYSE) team finished second in the Regional Competition at Kaskaskia College on Thursday, February 7th.  Sixteen students, selected by a combination of teacher recommendations and performance on a qualifying test, make up the team.  The ACES (Academic Challenge in Engineering and Science) competition was created as a way of rewarding the academic achievements of students and to encourage growth in the areas of science and engineering.  The competition consists of tests in the academic fields of Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Math, English, Engineering Graphics, and Computer Science.  Each competitor must take tests in two of the seven subjects.

Wesclin competes in Division 700, which consists of high schools with enrollments between 300 and 700.  The eight schools competing in Division 700 at Kaskaskia College this year were Bond County, Breese Central, Carlyle, Mater Dei, Nashville, Salem, Vandalia, and Wesclin.  Nashville placed first and Wesclin finished second.

Earning individual medals were: Owen Henderson - 1st in English, 3rd in Physics, Nate Brede - 2nd in Drafting, 3rd in Physics, Anissa Mumford - 2nd in Physics, Jamie Kattenbraker - 2nd in Math, and Chloe Wankel - 3rd in English.
