Dance Team Wins at State

February 23, 2018

Dance state champions

By: Brandt Goings

Wesclin Dance Team, coached by Lisa Middleton, came home from state competition with a first place trophy. In order to qualify for the state competition, the team had to receive a score of 80 points or higher at a regional. Luckily, they were able to do so at the Mattoon, Marion, and Highland competitions. On Saturday, February 10, 2018, the team competed in the IDTA (Illinois Drill Team Association) dance state competition in Springfield, Illinois. It consisted of various styles of dancing and color guard. Wesclin competed in three different routines in the competition, which included lyrical, pom, and pom dance. At the end of the day, the results were announced. The team received 8th in lyrical out of nine teams, 5th in pom out of seven teams, and 1st in pom dance out of ten teams. This is the team’s second consecutive year of placing first in pom dance. When asked how it felt to win pom dance, senior, Tori Beimfohr said, “It was a shock because when we competed at our other four regional competitions, the highest we placed was 2nd, and it had happened to be a tie.” It is safe to say the dance team is very pleased with their performance, as they should be.
