CC heads to State

February 23, 2018

Wesclin cross country goes to State

By: Emily Takacs

On October 25th, freshman Justin Mumford, ran a personal record time of 14:26 to qualify for state level cross country. The uneven terrain of the Benton, IL course proved to be challenging at the 11 o’clock start time. Finishing in second place, one second behind Luke Goebel of Mater Dei Catholic High School, Mumford advanced to the state race at Detweiller Park in Peoria, IL on November 4th. “Benton’s course is hard to compare with other courses considering it is 2.9 miles,” said Coach Weis. With encouragement, Coach Weis set high expectations for Justin Mumford in hopes of Justin coming home with an all-state title, which Justin, indeed, accomplished. Mumford came in an outstanding sixth place out of 210 individuals with a time of 15:06, just 41 seconds behind first place. Mumford also broke Wesclin High School’s record of fastest time.  As only a freshman, Wesclin is looking forward to seeing what his future brings.
